Overview
This
is a 1989 Porsche 944, originally a 2.7L 165hp. I purchased this car from
a private party in March of 2001 with 112,000 miles. It is Glacier Silver
(LY5U) with dark blue interior, full leather seats. Came with original
phone dial wheels which have since been sold. In 2003 I decided to upgrade
to a 3.0L 968 engine, thereby turning this 944 NA into a 944 "S3".
The "S3" was what Porsche was originally going to call the 968,
so in the 944 community this engine swap is referred to as the "S3"
swap. This car was one of the first to have the swap done that I know
of. I set up www.944s3.com to document the swap, and since that time,
numerous 944 owners have told me Argento gave them the motivation to do
the swap themselves. At the time of the swap, the car had 127k miles on
it. The engine had 67k miles so the odometer was reset to 67k. The odometer
currently reads 81k, so doing the math, the car has 141k miles on it.
So, doing a bit more math, in the last 6.5 years the car has been driven
29k miles. That is approximately 4,500 miles a year. I have been fortunate
to have a daily driver (1990 Acura Integra, 183,000 miles) so the 944
has not been driven on those short, daily driver trips. The car is generally
used only on beautiful days when I can take the top out, and Porsche Club
of America events.
As
you watch all the videos and look at all the pictures, please take note
of WHAT I filmed and snapped. For instance, the 944 is notorious for the
temp gauge creeping up. A few years ago, I replaced the entire cooling
system, from all hoses, radiator, waterpump, etc., everything except for
the coolant reservoir. Since then, and even since the engine swap, the
temp gauge does not get above the middle line. I film it periodically
throughout the different short clips, so that you can see this.
I
also tried to film and take pictures of everything that is wrong with
Argento as well, in order to make this purchase as smooth as possible
for you. From the small tears in the seats, to the front left fender,
and everything I know of and could remember in between, you are seeing
what's wrong with this 944 as well as what's right, to the best of my
ability.
The
very few 944 "S3"s I have seen up for sale have sold for higher
then I have my Buy It Now at, so I would not wait on the auction in order
to attempt to save $500 or even $1,000 dollars on. My dad just purchased
a 1992 968 with very low miles. Buy It Now was reasonable. The auction
was still going on. I was going to bid on it for him, and I said, "Dad,
do you want me to bid and possibly save $1,000 or MAYBE $1,500 or just
buy it now?" He responded, "It's the one I want, BUY IT NOW!"
Don't
pass up the opportunity to own the 944 everyone knew Porsche could build.
Why
are you selling?
I
am selling, in short, to consolidate. I am active duty USAF and am coming
up on a PCS. I own 4 cars. I just got married, so 4 cars with 2 drivers
makes no sense. The 944 is one of two to go. In addition to that, it is
time to sell. I have had an amazing run with this 944 since I purchased
it 7 years ago. I would not change anything. At the time, I really wanted
a 944 Turbo but could only afford a 944 NA. The rest is history. People
that talk to me, who own 944 Turbos, have said things like, "WHY
did you want a 944 Turbo when you have this???" They know the power
the 968 engine has, which is only truly brought to the surface with the
lighter 944 body and 944 NA 5-speed transaxle gearing. It is truly a drivers
car, but it's time for it to see a new driver. Trust me when I tell you
I will probably shed a tear when Argento pulls away from my house. Just
ask my wife. By the way, she wants me to keep it!

Maintenance
Records
Back
when I first purchased argento I had kept very good records of maintenance
on my website. In 2003 when I did the engine swap, I stopped that website
and went to www.944s3.com for the swap. Shortly thereafter, the first
website's server crashed and I lost everything after. I never went back
and updated. So the records below end right before the swap. I never thought
I would sell the car so it was not a huge concern to me to keep tip-top
records. But I believe you will find below that I have taken care of this
car mechanically since I purchased 6 and a half years ago...

New Oil Pickup Tube and new Rod bearings. The old rod bearings looked
AWESOME! Very clean and smooth. No damage WHATSOEVER to the crank. The
crank looked brand new. That's always a good sign.

Sunday, April 29 2001 Purchased!
I am the proud new owner of a 1989 Porsche 944 na, with 111,949 miles.
The car is Glacier Blue (LY5U) and is in great shape, with dark blue leather
interior. I love it. It's been a year since I was driving a Porsche after
the accident that sent my baby to PorscHeaven, but it feels great to be
back in a front engine, water-cooled P-car.

K&N,
Weltmeister Throttle Cam, 3M Stone Guards
Replaced the air filter with a K&N. If anything, it lasts for a lifetime
(which occasional cleaning/re-oiling), and it sounds cool as heck.
Replaced
the stock throttle cam with the Weltmeister shortened throttle cam, which
while it doesn't increase HP, it makes the car alot more fun to drive
by tightening up the slack in the throttle response.
The
most expensive part was the 3M Stone Guards, and this was also the hardest
to replace. Not hard as in mentally tough to do, but it took alot of elbow
grease to get those old puppies off there. The old yellowed nasty ones
are no more, replaced by crystal clear stone guards to protect the paint.

New
Bosch Platinum 4+
Installed the new Bosch Platinum 4+, easy enough to do. Noticed a smoother
idle and acceleration right off the bad. Old plugs looked clean, which
is a good indication of the condition of the engine and seals.

New
front 4x6 and rear 6x9 Pioneer speakers
My friend Phil helped me installed new 4x6 speakers up front, and we purchased
6x9 speakers and boxes for the rear. The boxes sit on the floor, but we
gave it enough slack in the wire that if someone ever did actually sit
back there in the cubby holes, I could set the speakers in the hatch area.
Purchased from Best Buy (I love Best Buy).

Replaced
radiator hose and thermostat *
Took car to Zotz Garage to replace the lower radiator hose and thermostat.
Car was overheating and this ended up being the problem. That 700 mile
trip from NC brought up a few problems, but these were no doubt going
to creep up at one point or another. I highly recommend Zotz Garage on
Semoran Blvd in Orlando, Florida.

Replaced
oil pressure sending unit
My oil pressure went haywire as I was driving home (it pegged at 5, even
at idle). I was hoping that it was the sending unit, and not other serious
problems. I purchased a sending unit from Zotz Garage and installed it
myself at my girlfriend's (ex) house. Her father has a 930 and is quite
a nice guy. He helped me get it right (I'd never done that before) and
was actually the one who pinpointed the problem. I wish I was still dating
her....

The two left CV joints went as well the day after Porsche, so I had CV

That is, unless you want your car damaged, and/or ripped off.

Fixed
cruise control, A/C recharged
Had this work done at East Coast Imports in Jacksonville, NC. Cruise was
a blast to have on the way down to Florida that week. A/C doesn't blow
cold enough, although it is cooler then before. The condenser is crimped
in a few spots so I suspect that I'm not getting full freon flow and heat
exchanging, hence the not quite cold enough A/C.

Re-leathered
steering wheel, blue leather
I sent my wheel off to AGLA to get releathered in the factory color blue.
It looks awesome, and even though they took quite some time and didn't
have a donor wheel I could borrow (they say they normally do), it was
worth the wait. I purchased a wheel at the local junk yard, from a 944
with the maroon interior, but it was worth it to be able to drive my car.

Hooker Aero Chamber and new exhaust tip
I don't have the $279 it takes to get an OEM exhaust, but the Hooker doesn't
sound bad at all. It was only about $70, and the tip was about $30 or
so. I had to take it in to get it put on by a muffler shop. Not bad sounding,
very stock.

Reconditioned
dash light reflectors, new bulbs
My instrument lighting sucks (as do most old 944s) so I opened it up and

removing the reflective paint with nail polish remover). Replaced a few
bulbs that looked really bad. Much brighter, I like.

Brand
new OEM radiator, upper/lower hoses, fans, temp switch
Replaced all of the above. Dad helped me, fun time. Brand new radiator

Car in Wilmington. The lower temp fan switch works great, as do the used
fans from Parts Heaven (my home away from home).

New
water pump, timing belt, balance shafts/belts, thermo...
Towed car to Tony's Foreign Car in Wilmington, NC because the car was
still overheating after I replaced the radiator and the other things.
Tony's found the waterpump impeller was broken, and was not circulating
the water. They replaced, and while they were in there, I had them do
the timing belt and what goes with that. Also, the reason air was getting
in the coolant was because of a busted $15 heater valve, so they replaced
that as well.

Motor
mounts, new OEM
After I picked up from Tony's, car vibrated hideously at nearly all RPM
range, especially 3000. This was ridiculous, and I am still frustrated
at Tony's because it was NOT like that when I took it in. I had to spend
an additional $400, although they worked out a deal because I think they
felt bad. It would have been more.

New
intake hose for cold air to alternator
Was under the car and noticed there was an intake hole that did not have
a hose on it. Found out from Rennlist that it was supposed to have a hose
that supplies air to the alternator. Purchased an intake hose at the local
parts store, got under there and fitted it up there with hose clamps.
Works great.

Weltmeister
200lbs front springs
Purchased from Paragon Products, and installed by East Coast Imports,
these front springs really stiffen up the front enough to lessen body
roll noticeably, while keeping daily driving in this car still fun as
can be. I had to adjust the eccentric bolts in the rear to level the car
when I got home. Much meaner looking ride with a lower profile, the way
the 944 should look.

Installed
fire extinguisher
I now have an extinguisher on the left side of the passenger side foot
well. It is hardly noticeable by the passenger unless I show them, so
it is out of the way enough to not annoy the passenger, yet perfectly
reachable in case of emergency.

Installed
used fuel rail
My fuel rail was still leaking (I thought it was the injectors, but I
was wrong) so I got on the horn with Parts Heaven and they sent me a used
rail for 90 bucks. I had to replace the FPR and accumulator on the new
rail with my 1989 model ones, because the rail came off an 88 and that
uses different settings for obvious reasons (smaller engine).
Fired
her up, worked like a champ. The next morning I drove 3.5 hours to VIR
to meet John D. from Rennlist and see The Racer's Group tear around VIR
at the VIR 500. Fun day.

New
fuel injector seals, cleaned
I was having a bear of a time finding where to buy fuel injectors for
the 2.7L engine from my 1989 944. These are pretty much one year only
injectors, due to the one year only they produced this type of 2.7L engine.
So,
I opted to clean them and reseal them myself. Easy enough to do. Purchased
the seals from Pelican Parts.

MSD
Blaster 2 Coil
Replaced OEM ignition coil with MSD Blaster 2. Best darn bang for your
buck upgrade/replacement for the 944. I highly recommend. Smoothed out
the idle and a very noticeable increase in power throughout the range.
Partly to do with the old coil being 13 years old, I'm sure. But if you
gotta replace, might as well go MSD.

Installed
968-style antenna
I got a wild hair up my butt to do this, plus the fact that my antenna
reception sucks. It's in the windshield, and is just horrible. I'm planning
on replacing the windshield, and the difference in cost between the antenna
and non-antenna windshield is about $500. I figured the 968 antenna looks
good, and is worth $500 off my windshield purchase. The only part I cringed
was due to the sound the drill bit made as it poked through the roof.
Looks great though. Even better, awesome reception.

KLA
Industries Strut Tower brace
Installed the KLA Industries strut tower brace. Awesome, simply awesome.
At least compared to stock. I'm sure the brace is right up there in quality,
or even better, then some of the others on the market. If you have a 944,
951, 968 or now even 911, this is the best upgrade for the price you can
do to the suspension. Daily driving is still a blast, and corning is even
better.

Argento's
Flaws
Argento
is by no means in excellent cosmetic condition. In fact, far from it.
The paint is old, and while for the last 6 years it has been mostly garaged,
it was old when I purchased. My father backed into the front left fender
back in 2002, and I tried to fix it myself. No mechanical damage at that
time, just cosmetic. My philosophy has always been if I had money to spend
on my car, I would spend it on the mechanical aspect of making this Porsche
944 more of a performance car, or bringing it back up to factory standards,
vice spending it on superficial (in my mind), cosmetic items. Your thoughts
may vary, everyone is different. I only tell you that to illustrate that
while cosmetically this car is far from perfect, mechanically it is sound.
And any dollars I had, went to make it mechanically better.
The
list below is as exhaustive as possible. IF there is a flaw with Argento
that I have failed to mention, it is because I either do not know about
it or completely forgot about it. In other words, if a flaw was left out,
IT WAS NOT INTENTIONAL.
In
an effort to be as straightforward as possible in this auction, knowing
some sales go down sight-unseen, I will now list, in detail, Argento's
flaws...
MECHANICAL
None
that I know of at this time! I spend all my dollars keeping this car
in good mechanical shape and increasing it's performance.
EXTERIOR
Lower
valence in poor condition. Purchased used to replace old one that was
damaged. Red color, repainted. Stone chips show red color. Had to repair
with a fiberglass repair kit. Otherwise, in working order and gets the
job done.
Driving
lights not functional. After repairing valence (see above), I did not
hook back up the driving lights with anticipation of getting new BOSCH
units. Never did.
Front
left fender damaged, repaired with bondo and painted by me. Father backed
his Expedition into me several years ago. I fixed as best I could. If
you purchased this car you could easily have this fender professionally
replaced/repainted for under $500. A used front left 944 fender would
set you back maybe $200. No other frame or body damage, only damage
was a dent in the fender. Do to this, a hard turn to the left caused
tire to rub fender. The tire is still completely functional, but has
some scraping on the outside wall, and the fender lip is pushed out.
See pictures/video.
Hood
has several small blemishes but otherwise good shape. No major damage.
Mirrors
have stone chips and are faded from time and driving.
Passenger
side door is a few millimeters (literally) low, so you just have to
push harder when shutting. Should be easily repaired with a new bracket.
Someone (not me, previous owner) must have hung on it.
Paint
faded on both sides of rear fenders. No damage to actual fender metal.
Rear
hatch in good shape, spoiler in good shape. No damage.
No
damage to rear bumper or surrounding area. Simply faded paint.
On
the vehicle history report, you will see an accident, front end damage
in 1992. When I purchased, previous owner explained to me that he hit
a large animal (could not tell what it was) on a road at night. He said
it wasn't a deer, probably a large racoon or badger. Anyway, he claimed
it. I knew this when I purchased it and found no evidence of any major
damage.
INTERIOR
Dash
has several cracks. See pictures.
AC
button and defroster button broke off of climate control panel. Panel
still works, buttons just are not there.
AC
was never recharged after engine swap. As far as I know, AC system worked
before engine swap. 944/968 AC systems are simple and easy to fix, I
just didn't care for AC. Always meant to get the AC delete kit, just
never did.
Steering
wheel leather in great shape. Releathered with AGLA Porsche leather
in original factory color. See pictures.
CD
bracket broke, however easily fixed if you put a CD player in this car
that was worth anything. My CD head unit is old and barely works, I
hardly care to listen to music when I drive, would rather listen to
the car.
Seats
in descent shape. I have seen better, but I have definitely seen worse.
All in all, a few small tears. Easily releathered/upholstered.
Driver-side
window switch panel is not able to be mounted because the screw holes
in door panel shredded. If you knew what these were made of you would
understand why. I have not figured out a fix, however you probably have
the time to do so.
Headliner
behind the passengers side is slightly torn and the cardboard piece
that goes over it is slightly bent.
Rear
seats in perfect shape. No tears or blemishes.
Rear
speakers rewired to a non-permanent, rear flower mounded 6x9" speaker
setup. Can keep this setup, or can easily wire back into factory location.
Rear
hatch cover/retractor broke. Cover in good shape, just the retracting
mechanism is non-functional. Fixable for the mechanically inclined with
a part from a dismantler or junkyard. I just never use it so I left
it alone.
Hatch
area in descent shape. Carpet faded in some spots. Used blue automotive
carpet die to fix. Looks descent.
A
few snaps missing from the carpet where the carpet connects to the perimeter
of the hatch area.
This
944 S3 is faster then a stock 944 Turbo. I kid you not.
You
will not be disappointed if you are looking for a Porsche 944 toy that
goes like heck and handles well. This is your car. If you want a museum
piece with leather that feels like it just came off the cow, this S3 is
not for you. But if you want to drive a Porsche like it was meant to be
driven, and specifically drive the 944 that Porsche SHOULD HAVE BUILT,
this S3 has your name all over it.
If
bidding is in excess of $6,500...
...and
the deposit is made within 24 hours, I will include a box of spare 944/968
random parts (WORTH ~ $200), and a factory Porsche 944 car cover (WORTH
~ $200), complete with Porsche crest on the cover!
Don't
pass up the opportunity to own the 944 everyone knew Porsche could build.
Terms
of Auction (and other random legal mumbo jumbo)
After
the auction ends, the sale is final. Only bid if you are serious about
owning and have the funds to complete the purchase. Auction price is final.
No negotiation takes place after the auction. My representation of my
944 is as close to perfect as I can possibly get. Ask all questions before
the auction ends.
PAYMENT
A
$250 non-refundable des posit is due within 24 hours of the close of the
auction or within 24 hours of the purchase through "BUY IT NOW"
without exception. Payment is preferred through Paypal however if you
have made other arrangements (cashiers check through a bank for example)
that you have assured me is being sent Express mail my way, that is acceptable.
Final payment is due within SEVEN (7) days and before the car will leave
my possession. Sorry, but I have to protect myself. As far as trusting
me, I am an officer in the United States Air Force and if you think I
am going to ruin my career by trying to trick someone out of a car sale,
you are mistaken. Again, the title and car will not leave my possession
until complete payment is made. If using a cashier's check to pay for
the car, you MUST CLEAR IT WITH ME FIRST. Let me know what bank you will
be using. I will not accept some unknown "Bank of Uganda" check
as payment for this car. You understand, I'm sure. Bank of America, Wakovia,
Regions, etc, for example are acceptable. I need to be able to call the
bank to ensure the funds are there in order to protect myself. I will
also accept bank wire transfers but buyer will pay all associated wire
transfer fees. Paypal payments accepted for SECURITY DEPOSIT ONLY, NOT
for final payment. That would be a ridiculous fee paid to Paypal!
SHIPPING
I
will help load this car on a carrier but that is the extent of my shipping
abilities. There are several big name shippers that you can try out. DAS,
Intercity, etc. If time is not of the essence, you can ship a car from
East Coast to West Coast for around $600 (uncovered) and around $1300
(covered).
If
bidding is in excess of $6,500...
...and
the deposit is made within 24 hours, I will include a box of spare 944/968
random parts (WORTH ~ $200), and a factory Porsche 944 car cover (WORTH
~ $200), complete with Porsche crest on the cover!
OTHER
As
mentioned, I have made my best effort to describe this car in as much
detail, both positive and negative, as possible so that a sight-unseen
purchase can be realistically made. However, if there is something you
find that I did not mention, it was not left out intentionally. I am not
responsible for anything regarding this car after the payment has been
made and the title has changed hands. This is an 18 year old Porsche,
and as such is SOLD AS IS, NO WARRANTY EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED.
I
RESERVE THE RIGHT TO CANCEL THIS AUCTION AT ANY TIME FOR ANY REASON WHATSOEVER.
If
you do not agree with my legal mumbo jumbo, please contact me to complain.
Otherwise, don't bid.
Finally...
The
very few 944 "S3"s I have seen up for sale have sold for much
higher then I have my Buy It Now at, so I would not wait on the auction
in order to attempt to save $500 or even $1,000 dollars on. My dad just
purchased a 1992 968 with very low miles. Buy It Now was reasonable. The
auction was still going on. I was going to bid on it for him, and I said,
"Dad, do you want me to bid and possibly save $1,000 or MAYBE $1,500
or just buy it now?" He responded, "It's the one I want, BUY
IT NOW!"
Don't
pass up the opportunity to own the 944 everyone knew Porsche could build.
